36th Annual Potomac Cleanup & Open House

Do you want to make a difference for the environment and help ensure we all have clean drinking water? We welcome you to join us Sat April 6, 9 am–2 pm, for the 36th Annual Potomac River Watershed Cleanup and Open House hosted by the Alice Ferguson Foundation located in Accokeek, MD, just 30 min from downtown DC.

You’ll be helping to clean up trash along our gorgeous Potomac riverbanks – the longest freshwater Living Shoreline in America. You’re also invited to bring a picnic and enjoy the scenic view of Mt. Vernon!

We’re celebrating our 70 years of environmental work, in which time, with the help of people like you, we’ve led the cleanup of 8.5 million pounds of trash from the Potomac watershed. You can help reach the goal of removing 10 million poundswe can’t do this without you!

As part of our Open House, you’ll also have the chance to see our uniquely sustainable, net-zero, solar- and geothermal-powered Living Building to learn more about our STEM-focused environmental education programs for kids. There’ll be opportunities to look at macroinvertebrates (wriggly creatures!) and touch animal artifacts such as skulls, turtle shells, and snakeskins!.

For the big day, we’ll provide you with bags and gloves, and you can clean up the shoreline trash for as long as you’re comfortable. The data from the trash you clean up will help make the case for better environmental protection legislation!

We look forward to seeing you on April 6 – thank you for caring about the environment and the Potomac!

PS Students are eligible to earn SSL hours for their participation!
