Washington DC, May 12, 2021……. The Capital Pride Alliance (CPA) has begun unveiling its list of events and programs scheduled for the Capital Pride Celebration this June, on the heels of this week’s announcement from DC Mayor Muriel Bowser regarding city-wide reopening guidelines. The announcement brings welcome news for members of the LGBTQ+ community who have been eager to celebrate once again, and CPA hopes to expand its already planned programs and events where possible, factoring in venue and permit availability, as well as limited resources as a result of the pandemic. Nonetheless, the organization is confident that its roster of reimagined and new events will be a welcome opportunity for the community to reconnect, while creating critical opportunities for local businesses.

“As it becomes safer for us to gather together once again, we hope that everyone will join the Capital Pride Alliance in 2021, as we celebrate our community and continue the important work that we’ve committed ourselves to,” said Ryan Bos, CPA Executive Director. “Whether you plan on celebrating virtually or in person, our upcoming events provide safe and creative ways to honor our local traditions while taking into account varying levels of personal comfort,” he continued. “There are many ways to celebrate Pride in Washington, DC,” Bos said.

Featured are a number of first-time events including an ambitious city-wide decorating campaign, Paint the Town Colorful with Pride. Spanning the entire month of June, this event encourages residents, businesses, and organizations to decorate their most public-facing spaces for Pride month. Paint the Town Colorful with Pride will run in conjunction with a month-long fundraising campaign to support the newly developed GivePride365 Fund, benefitting LGBTQ+ charities in the National Capital Region. Registration is required and CPA will provide registrants with a free colorful yard sign; each participant will be included on an interactive Paint the Town Colorful virtual map, and will have the option to create personal fundraisers to support the fund.

Although restrictions throughout the Nation’s capital continue to be lifted, city permits for large-scale outdoor events are still unavailable. In lieu of a traditional parade, the organization’s creative team is planning its first-ever Colorful Capital Pridemobile Parade. Born out of the success of last Fall’s OutBrigade, this unique mobile parade will feature the official Pridemobile trolly, followed by a colorful array of automobiles decorated by registered organizations and businesses. The Capital Pridemobile Parade route will feature some of the city’s most lively areas, including Dupont and Logan Circles, and will pass by iconic landmarks such as the U.S. Capitol. The procession will also visit areas with the highest levels of participation in Paint the Town Colorful with Pride. Thus, the public will now have a unique opportunity to bring the festivities to their front doors.

Additional in-person events will include the annual Capital Pride Honors reception on Friday, June 11, as well as a city-wide event for food and drink lovers, the Taste of Pride Brunch on Sunday, June 13. Larger events will continue to be planned throughout the year as permitted by the city. A current list of Celebration events and programs can be found at www.CapitalPride.org/celebration.

“Nearly 1 out of 10 people in our Nation’s Capital identify as LGBTQ+,” said Ashley Smith, President of the Board of Directors of the CPA. “These events will celebrate and uplift our rich intersectional community, and importantly, raise awareness and support for our new GivePride365 charitable fund,” he added. “As we set our eyes on a full-scale celebration in 2022, it is now more important than ever to support Pride,” concluded Smith.

Most events being offered are free to the public. Nevertheless, CPA hopes to raise awareness and resources for its newly formed GivePride365 Fund, benefiting local LGBTQ+ charities throughout the region, as well as its new Pride365 Shop, supporting local LGBTQ+ businesses and organizations.
